Journal Blog of Week Nov. 29 - Dec. 3

Post your observations here for your practicum for this last week of November - first week of December. No later than the end of today, I will have an exact accounting of the number of hours you've completed at Simle Middle School so far. Remember that if you don't blog here and let me know, I won't have record of them. So, if there is a discrepancy in the number of hours I have recorded for you and what you think you have, it most likely is because I'm using the blog posts and presuming you have 3 hours for each post.

Regardless, you'll have the log signed by the Simle people who will verify them so we're good!

  1. Simle Hours 26-27: Today was an active day! During the morning tutoring hour we hosted four students from a language arts class. The students did not complete their permissions slips to watch a movie in class and had to sit with us while they completed language arts packages instead. Needless to say, they were pretty bummed and were reluctant to complete their work. It was fairly easy to keep them on task. All I needed to do was walk around and ask them if they needed assistance. Some accepted and others quickly went right back to work. Funny! Next, I moved with Mrs. M to morning study hall. She had what she refers to as her “easy group” today. I worked with a timid young man on an interpretive and critical thinking project about Edgar Allen Poe’s “The Tell-Tale Heart”. He was shy at first but then began to feel more comfortable and open up. After we completed that project, he asked if I would help him with another assignment. In the end, I felt happy to help a student make progress. It was a good day!

  2. Wednesday December 1st, everything went as usual. I arrived for lunchtime tutoring. I walked around and helped those that needed. Before we knew it, it was time for the 8th grade group. Mostly everyone was working on Math, a cookie crossword puzzle, and their maps. I helped quit a few with their crossworld puzzles. This was fun and also a change of pace from the homework that I usually help out with, where I have to hurry n review what they are doing and help them on top of that. That can be a little challenging but it usually works out. I then joined Mrs. Maher in her study hall. I helped a student with his map, which was also fun and a change of pace. Helping him with is art project made the day go much more fast. It was a good, easy going day at Simle.

  3. Thursday December 2nd-- Same routine as always, Usually when I arrive there it a slow morning until study hall begins. Then, I either transition into study hall or go to Ms. Lord's room. Today I went into Ms. Lord's room. For some random reason I like going to her room. Even though it is a rather small classroom with a couple bookshelves and one table that all the students and teacher sit at I still like it here. It's friendly and comfortable.

  4. November 23rd- Today I had the privilege to meet a few new (well new to me) students. I don’t know if they were out of school for awhile or what their story was. I know many kids that come to Ms. Lord's room have untraditional living arrangements, and I wonder if this was a factor into why this was the first time I met them. I know they were not new to the school because Ms. Lord and the other students visited with them like they had been there all year. I helped one student with his math homework. He was very persistent in getting it finished so he can bring his grade up so he could be eligible to play basketball. He finished his homework with ease, which also led me to wonder why he was failing in the first place??

  5. December 3rd

I went to the cafeteria for the first part of the morning. I helped a girl student with her English homework. Then I went to Mrs. Maher's studyhall. I helped a student research for his his powerpoint book project about the Battle of Bull Run. That took about all period. He didn't really know how to pick out the important facts of the battle. Then after that I helped out in lunchroom tutoring.

  6. December 8th

It was a pretty quiet morning in the cafeteria. There was only one student. I went to Mrs. Maher's study hall. I ran some errands for here getting paper work from some of the teachers. I went to the library during her period. I helped one student with his web quest for history class on the Civil War. The other student I helped her with her paper come to a finish. She needed help citing sources and finding pictures about the German culture.

  7. December 10th

There was only a couple of students in the cafeteria for help with math and one student was in trouble. I went to Mrs. Maher's class. I had to run and get some books for some students from teachers. I worked with one student to make sure he finished writing his chapter 17 history notes. He tends to wonder off or get easily distracted. It was a good last day :)
